The Preliminary Examination is objective in nature, the Main Examination is descriptive/conventional, and candidates qualifying the Main Examination are called for the Personality Test. Marks obtained in the Preliminary and Main stages are counted for determining final merit, along with the Personality Test marks.

The Preliminary Examination consists of two objective-type papers.

Negative Marking in Preliminary Examination
There is negative marking in the objective-type Preliminary Examination.
For every incorrect answer, one-third of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted.

Candidates are also not permitted to use calculators in the objective-type papers.
Shortlisting for the Main Examination
The Commission will prepare the list of candidates eligible for the Main Examination based on the prescribed qualifying criteria in the General Studies paper and stream-specific paper.
The number of candidates admitted to the Main Examination is expected to be approximately six to seven times the total approximate number of vacancies.
